Gentle Fire (1974)

Earle Brown: Four Systems (1954)
John Cage: Music for Amplified Toy Pianos (1960)
John Cage: Music for Carillon 1 - 3 (1952/54)
Christian Wolff: Edges (1968)

Gentle Fire: Richard Bernas, Hugh Davies, Graham Hearn, Stuart Jones, Michael Robinson
Engineers: Allan Parsons & Stuart Eltham

A milestone of electro-acoustic music from this legendary British ensemble. The group, and each of its members for himself, were pioneering in the fields of live-electronics, instrument construction and collective composition. Also closely associated with the experimental work of Stockhausen in the early 70s, they were one of the groups playing in "Sternklang").

This record features a selection of graphic scores from three of the four composers of the New York School. It is remarkable how each of the pieces on this album unfolds in its own sound world.
"Edges" by Christian Wolff is just one page of loosely arranged symbols and words, to be (not) played in rather unusual ways. Here's the instructions for the performance:
The score for Cage's "Music for Amplified Toy Pianos" is a collection of transparent sheets with dots, small circles, a line and a grid. Superimposing the sheets, the performers are instructed to read the markings as predefined categories of sound events, in relation to the grid which provides the dimensions of pitch/sound (vertical) and time (horizontal). A single reading of the score material may look like this:
The two long extra tracks by Gentle Fire, "Music Project V-II" (1974) and "Group Composition III" (1971), are unreleased live recordings by the "Hessischer Rundfunk" (HR) in Frankfurt, from the same year as the album release.

  2. major thank you for this gentle fire stuff. it is so rare and hard to find but so vital. but anyway is there a chance you can help me out re part 2? i cannot get rapidshare to let me download part 2 [part 1 downloaded fine]. it refuses to let me download part 2 by contiually telling me i am downloading stuff when i am not. any chance you could re-post it? to see if it has a glitch or something.
one thing - i dont have a rapid share account. is it simply that rapidshare are doing this to stop me downloading whislt not being an account holder?

  3. Aporia6, bravissimo :-)

Nick, you're absolutely right about GF. Back in High School, I had one heck of a time convincing a friend to sell me this copy - but I'd do it again, any time. Somehow, these interpretations never wear out. About RS: if you're not a paying member, you have to wait a rather annoying amount of time between 2 downloads. They tell you how long when you reach the 2nd page... but I'd say it's worth the wait.

Anyway, I'll try'n upload the files to a multi-sharer again in the coming week.

no worries just wanted to let you know how it appears from this end as it were. in the meantime i will wait and thanks again for this great music.

  6. Sorry, I haven't been here much lately. I've had some real life moments such as a funeral and a wedding to attend to among other things. All I've done lately was reup a few files for this blog's archives because the file host for those particular files (Quicksharing) seems to have gone kaput. That's why I have not posted anything new lately. There should be something or two tomorrow.

Thanks for Gentle Fire. You were right that I would enjoy this a lot. Electro sonic beauty indeed. Also thanks for Korean Shrine Music and Empty Words IV. Great job once again.

I found another multiple file mirroring service called Fileberry. I used it for some of those reposts since Sharebee and Massmirror are malfunctioning at the moment. Fileberry uses five file hosters which is more than the others have used. Only drawback I noticed so far for Fileberry is that it doesn't have a counter for how many times the link has been clicked. Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

  7. I forgot to put the link for Fileberry. It is of course,

    www.fileberry.com

Also, I noticed an Alan Parsons credited as an engineer. Is the same guy behind the Alan Parsons Project and who engineered Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Never knew that Parsons was involved with any sort of avant-garde project such as this.

  8. Thanks, grey, for the link. I'll try it out with my next post.

And yes, looks like it is THE Alan Parsons. After all, the sound of this LP is really fantastic - crisp, clear and dynamic.

  11. Well, it appears that Fileberry has gone kaput. :( What a disappointment. The good news is that Sharebee is working again. I'm once again on the lookout for another alternative just in case Sharebee malfunctions again as Massmirror is also still malfunctional.

And yes, looks like it is THE Alan Parsons. After all, the sound of this LP is really fantastic - crisp, clear and dynamic.

Nice interesting bit of trivia. Parsons is an excellent engineer. I think he's a better engineer than an artist although a few of his songs get stuck in my head from time to time.

  13. Thanks, HCE. Good stuff this!

Not to be a whiner, but I wonder if you could tag your files? Or if not, at least list the track names in the blog entry. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would find it helpful.

  14. Many thanks for the new link. I first discovered the world of electronic/electroacoustic music in the late '60's and Gentle Fire was a name I quickly came across as being something of a 'supergroup' of the genre, but was never able to track down any recordings. It will be so nice, at last, to give them a listen. Again, many thanks.
