Background from Wikipedia:

Tristano (19 March 1919 - 18 November 1978) was a jazz pianist and composer. He performed in the Cool jazz, bebop, post bop and Avant-garde jazz genres. He remains a somewhat overlooked figure in jazz history, but his enormous originality and dazzling work as an improviser have long been appreciated by knowledgable jazz fans; in addition, his work as a jazz educator meant that he has exerted a substantial indirect influence on jazz, through figures such as Lee Konitz and Bill Evans.

My copy of Descent Into the Maelstrom was issued by Inner City Records which was originally issued in Japan by East Wind. The title track is some awesome Edgar Allan Poe-inspired experimental free jazz that is basically an overdubbed recording of two performances. It was so gripping, I was convinced to get the copy of this LP. This album is a compilation of performances and recordings from 1952 to 1966.

  1. thank you so much for this and everything. Why isnt this in print? when there's so much other Tristano available?
I got into tristano through my study of the painter Robert Ryman, who studied sax with Lennie till he switched to painting.
Eunmi Shim's book on Tristano is very interesting, as is Peter Ind's (bassist on this record).
