In the year before this album was recorded, George Lewis' association with Chicago's Muhal Richard Abrams and the AACM had led to recording dates with Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton and a tour with Count Basie. Gradually his startling musicianship - the time-honoured jazz virtues of a mellow tone and driving sense of rhythm, harnessed to a soaring imagination and technique - became known to a growing number of listeners. The New York session with Braxton's big band led to a European tour with the saxophonist in 1976. On his return, Lewis came to Toronto to play at A Space - his first solo concert - and to record this album. On the Piece For Three Trombones Simultaneously, Lewis overdubbed all three trombone parts in the studio. The rest is solo. Solo horn albums have a curious ambience, inherent in the perfect clarity with which they reveal a performer's abilities. In this setting this amazing young musician, through the medium of a trombone, reveals himself as a unique solo voice. (David Lee, Coda Magazine)
