I apologize for the lack of posts lately. My laptop has not been working correctly for the past week. I am typing this post on a computer at the library. Something is causing my CPU to be used even if I am not doing anything. My processing speed is slow and therefore I cannot do much of anything. Last night my laptop took about 30 minutes just to get Windows up and running. I had to switch to Safe Mode where I am unable to access the Internet, but at least my computer works a little better. I plan on reformatting my hard drive sometime in the next few days. Hopefully, that will solve my problem and this blog will be back on the air soon.
Two possible quick fixes to your laptop problem -
ReplyDelete1) Reset your DMA see http://winhlp.com/node/10 for how and why.
2) Create a new user account on your laptop. If it speeds up transfer your personal items, desktop, feeds etc and delete your old user account.
Keep up the good work - we like the unusual.

yes, please, delete some of the files which fill up the space Windows should have set apart for its own functioning, run the antivirus, a little sweeping in the corners, and come back to us!
ReplyDeletebest wishes and best of luck!
ReplyDeletecan offer no advice but will take the opportunity to mention how AWESOME you are and how much i LOVE your blog.
looks like an svchost problem...
ReplyDeleteI'm back on the library computer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments and the helpful tips everyone. I'll turn on Task Manager on my laptop and check to see if svchost could be the problem. I've seen svchost in Task Manager, but it never occurred to me to investigate it. I'll also look into resetting the DMA. And, of course, I'll have my antivirus program scan again. I've used the "quick scan" feature a couple of days ago and it took just about forever just to quick scan.
Hope you have yer issue fixed the soonest man.

Windows Restore Point and running CCleaner on the registry afterwards might do the trick..
ReplyDeleteBest Regards
For some years I've made backup images of clean, fully working system with Acronis True Image (there are other prog's which work just as well: Ghost, O&O etc). Something goes wrong it takes 15 mins to restore system as new. Need to ensure personal files are backed up as well, though (& for that I use Comodo Backup, which is free).
ReplyDeleteI personally have never trusted Win Restore but that too seems to work for people.
Many thanks for your blog - always of interest.
windows is constantly hijacked, a fesh install is compromised minutes or hours after accessing the internet. Nothing you can do. Antivirus companies MAKE the viruses, anyway nowadays hackers use kernel hooks, which completely bypass the level virus scanners operate on, they are completely unaware of the badness as it operates on a deeper level. Only one solution: use linux: open source, free, robust and as user friendly and easy to install as windows ever was. You won't know yourself!

ReplyDeleteI tried linux several years ago: nice, but my knowledge & software investment is with Windows. If you have the right knowledge/tools, things don't need to be as bad as you suggest. But, yes, all things being equal, linux is preferable.
But grey calx deserves better than people squabbling over OS's...
sounds like your maschine has been hijacked. best bet is to do a clean install, upgrade to latest service pack and virus scanner and firewall. or bring it in to somebody who does it for you.
ReplyDeleteon the OSes: linux, opensolaris are pretty easy to install and use these days. I nuked my last windos maschine over the holidays. now using a macbook (second hand cheap and great!!!) and open solaris. can only sing highest praises!
get a trial copy of kapersky anti-virus. It'll find both viruses and adware that are problems. Also remember to click "all users" in your task manager to show the CPU utilization of all processes.
ReplyDeleteGoogle 'ATF Cleaner , no need to install app.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is awesome
Best wishes
