Marine Mammal Fund - The Singing Humpbacks
released on cassette tape (yes, Oxford Dictionary, this is still a valid term)
This one is another thrift store discovery. It's been a while since beautiful humpback whale singing has been posted. The cover and the cassette itself says that this was part of the Voices of Nature Series. Due to lack of time, I could not attempt to find more info about this series as nothing was showing up in the first few pages of my favorite search engine.
The liner notes does provide a brief explanation of this series:
The VOICES OF NATURE SERIES is a production of the Marine Mammal Fund, a non-profit organization devoted to public education of ocean and marinelife issues. This series is designed to acquaint the listener with the diversity of life on our planet through the sounds that these life forms produce.
The meaning of animal sounds is little understood. No doubt some of the sounds they generate are used in communicating with others of their kind, while other sounds are used to warn of danger. Through all of the possible meanings, one thing is crystal clear: animal sounds as perceived by the human ear are fascinating and can be listened to for hours.

whales melodies ~~~ thank you very much :)
ReplyDeletei think the Caribbean singers on the end of side 2 is actually the famous "solo whale" recording that got this whole shebang started? i have to give it a little research to be 100% sure... i'm also checking to see if either of the 2 selections on side #1 are contained on my CD by Brockelhurst. The Glacier Bay one is certainly new to me, and has a very unique and evocative sound. I'm enjoying the tape very much, thank you!

Jaques Cousteau's AMAZON book (prolly some laser holographic virtual 3-D bullshit, by now, but it was a book 20 years ago) said they were using underwater mics to record all of the fishes in the river... so there's got to be soooo much more out there, especially of the non-terrestrial variety... Reminds me that Quinn's Antarctica CD has some nice orcas and weddell seals, kinda like what you've heard on the Herzog film by the similar name (don't remember it, exatcly) b/c Quinn did some of the sound...

also, Symphonies series is amazing, if you can find it.. my faves are #1 and #4, very active, and #1 is especially melodic which gives it lots of continuity to my human ears... totally natural and not manmade. Nada Brahma (spelling?), UNSTRUCK SOUND as the Hindu's had realized millenia ago....
dear friend
ReplyDeletethanks for your transcription of the cassette tape of these whale songs and for your site & your time. your "time-capsules" are a real treat.
yours sincerely

yeah, the caribbean singers selection is that famous recording that went into outer space with voyager and that shows up on payne's frirst lp release as "solo whale."
ReplyDeletebut this recording has a totally different ambiance. i don't know if it is lo-fi or hi-fi, but it really has a great vibe and makes me feel like i'm in the ocean. the whole tape is fantastic music and sounds great.
so, i was having fun looking thru my nature recordings in order to make the comparison, and i found this selection which i believe was posted on the old ylow blog, waaay back, with Elk sounds. i liked it so much back when i found it, that i extracted out just the actual elk calls (performed by elk!) from what was oriented toward hunters (bad vibe.) if you have a chance to listen to it, i'd love to know what you think? sometimes, i can't tell the difference between a whale or this large mammal. i think its pretty interesting, hope you like it... THANKS FOR YOUR POST!!!!
