[uncredited artist] - A Week in Hawaii: Island Jungle
CD released in 1987
On the east coast of the island of Hawaii, about five miles north of Hilo on Route 19, there is a small, unassuming sign which reads "Scenic Drive -- 4 Miles." It was very early on a Sunday morning (exactly 24 hours after I had landed at Kona airport) that I traveled past this modest landmark and decided it might be worth investigating.
Scenic Drive is a narrow road which winds through a beautiful, lush jungle. Occasional small streams gurgle beneath rustic wooden bridges and everywhere there is the pleasant background of the ocean below the cliffs and the noisy din of rustling leaves and native birds delighting in their leafy green kingdom. At the top of a crest where the ocean once again emerges into view, I pulled over and began recording. The result is a cacophony of sound; the jungle came to life as the sun rose over the Pacific. (Toby Mountain)
Technical Notes
The following equipment was used: 2 Schoeps microphones (a pair of cardioids), 1 custom mic pre-amp built by Scott Kent of BKM Associates, 1 Sony PCM-F1 digital processor with Sony SL-2000 Beta video deck. Equalization was occasionally used to "roll off" the low end (80 Hz). This low end ambience is a strange phenomenon which the microphones "hear" but that our psychoacoustic system appears to filter out.
This is a part of the series of the "A Week in Hawaii" releases. I hope to find the rest sometime soon.

Hello people of the Kloset. This is a fine posting and i really love the soundsdisks of Ryko. A Month in a Brasilian rainforest - series is my favorite. But you might be karefull with these bekause here in the Netherlands they are still on sale (http://www.bol.com/nl/p/a-week-in-hawaii-midnight-rainshower/1000004001405692/) for 15 euro a piese (sorry, some letters do not work on my keyboard)
ReplyDeleteI like what I have heard so far on Ryko's discs (which are called The Atmosphere Collection). I assure you I'll be careful. Hopefully this particular post will at least encourage folks to check out the other discs in the collection.
DeleteThanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteDownloading now, will give it a listen. I live in Hilo and know the road. You describe it well. The only thing I would add is bring some bug dope! We stopped once, while taking the scenic drive, to walk into the forest, right after the bridge. Went down to the creek. Absolutely beautiful. But without bug-spray, we were swarmed by hundreds of mosquitos within a few minutes. I can only imagine how awesome the Big Island was before the ships brought the mosquitos.
Also this road will take you to the botanical gardens.
Again, thanks for posting.
You're welcome.
DeleteThat sounds like good advice regarding the mosquitoes. I'll bet the Big Island was awesome before the mosquitoes arrived.
thanks, grey calx. this recording was done by dr. toby mountain, as stated in the liner notes - i only mention it because you write of an "uncredited artist"... ;)
ReplyDeletecheers,
lucky
Hi Lucky, Good to see you around these parts.
DeleteI noticed that Mountain did the recording, but I wasn't sure who to credit or if I should put his name in the mp3 tag since there is no indication of anyone being credited on the CD and the booklet. Some of these recordings don't bother to include such info therefore it's frustrating when trying to figure out who should be credited. Perhaps the artist credit should be given to Mother Nature. ;)
Cheers.
I didn't know this collection until I discovered your blog, and I must say it's a pure delight to listen to these soundscapes. Thank you very much, from France.
ReplyDeleteSuper thanks!
ReplyDeleteCan you reup this?
