FYI-in case you were wondering:
I know I haven't posted much lately-(an understatement if ever I heard one!), and it seems like all of my Rapidshare links of the past two years are now dead.
I'll post this (above) on a site which has proven relatively trustworthy so far (though not without its own inevitable drawbacks) but I'm not sure if they will be more or less dependable in the future...
That said, I plan to begin posting again with a little more frequency, but I also wonder how many of you may want re-uploads of past posts instead. Not many requests have come in, (and I haven't even filled any of those yet).
With the wretched state of the filehosting sites and the depressing uncertainty I feel toward them as a result, I wonder whether it's worth trusting any of them enough to make the effort.
Nonetheless, above is a post which I hope you will enjoy, whoever and wherever you are, and I hope you continue to have a Happy Holiday.
Best wishes from myself AND on behalf of our indefatigable host,
grey calx.
The hosting sites really are the biggest drawback. I agree with UBU's take - DON'T TRUST THE CLOUD!
ReplyDeleteHi rev.b- Yes,those clouds are a foggy lot, but I think Ubu pays lotsa money (relatively speaking) for a private server-thing and we here, the small potatoes, don't have the resources.
DeleteOr am I uninformed?
(This last wouldn't surprise me).
thanks for the infos,
ReplyDeletekeep on going whatever you want to do DrEyescope! (and grey calx too)
i myself (and all of the members) still believe in this blog;
happy holiday to you all!
Thanks Martin.
DeleteHappy holidays to you too.
Thanks for the support-
DeleteHappy New Year to you too!
The cloud is a fickle mistress. Rapidshare now chokes one's download speeds to 3.4 KB/S without an account, and every couple of months it seems another provider decides to go out of business. Lately I've been pretty impressed with mega.co.nz, but who knows how long it'll last.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Ubu, if these problems ever make the blog unsustainable, the Wolf Fifth route might be a good last resort. As long as the closet's still open however I intend to drop by. Happy New Year to you all.
Indeed, the cloud is fickle. Rapidshare has been sucking for a long time, yet to my amazement, it still persists while better providers go out of business, get shut down or they change to the point they're useless. I wonder why people keep using (and in some cases paying) for Rapidshare. I thought of using Mega, but I'm not sure if I should. It could be taken offline anytime and I don't feel comfortable using anything owned by Kim Dotcom.
DeleteIt looks like Zippyshare and Adrive are the best ones in the cloud for now. Zippyshare is a lot like what Mediafire once was. I have thought about trying something with Ubu.
Happy new year to you too!
The Wolf Fifth thing was a one-off,I think.
DeleteThat is-Wolf shut down more or less involuntarily. The meld with Ubu was initiated by Kenneth Goldsmith,as a way of keeping the blog intact. Many other blogs have gone down without Ubu offering to jump in..Ubu has grabbed a couple of things from this blog, but the entire contents are perhaps not of interest to them.(Wolf was more consistent than we are here). Plus- our "catalog" is much larger.
Speaking from MY position only-these and many other possible reasons make an Ubusolution unlikely.
Thanks for your input, and Happy New Year!

I don't know if this is the place to leave requests, but a while ago I requested a re-up of the Time Records Contemporary Sound split release of Morton Feldman and Earle Brown: http://closetcurios2.blogspot.com/2008/11/morton-feldmanearle-brown-split-release.html
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! This blog is one of the best resources for hard-to-find and historic new music recordings on the Internet.
Actually, the "Updates about Old Posts" page is the best place to leave requests, but your request is noted. I'll make sure to have the Feldman/Brown split release back up very soon.
DeleteGreat, thanks! I'll be sure to post requests in the correct place from now on. Thanks for your response! Happy new year!
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know that you're back, I was starting to get really worried that this site will close.
As for me, I would prefer if you rather updated old uploads instead of posting new ones. Also, what interests me the most is the work of avant-garde (and non-avant-garde) classical music composers, for example Ligeti, Berio, Takemitsu, Cage and the likes. I will write some comments about particular links to the Updates section soon.
Best wishes and happy new year!
Karcsi- Thank you for your comment.Your vote for re-ups is noted.
DeleteHappy New Year to you too!
Glad to see things are running again. I would like to see re-ups as well as new things.
