Music of Vietnam

Trân Quang Hai and Hoàng Mông Thuy - Music of Vietnam

From the back cover:

This is a recording of the music of Vietnam. Without doubt, we can consider it one of the first positive encounters - by necessity brief, but certainly exhaustive, also for those not specifically interested in oriental music, with this important and many-faceted universe of sound. Immediately evident, for example, is the instrumental wealth of this music, its deep-rooted ties with the history of Vietnam and the historical and cultural traditions of both the subaltern and dominating classes. Participant not only of the reality of a single region, but in the broad context of a vast, subcontinental area (for example, a strong Chinese influence), the music of Vietnam under certain aspects assumes a paradigmatic validity with European musical expression - at least at certain levels.
Editor and interpreter of this recording is Trân Quang Hai, certainly one of the most prominent ethnomusicologists of this specialized area of study and performance. His approach to music is not only all-encompassing and open to new expressive possibilities, but as an artist he is also able to bestow a vital, human element which goes beyond the academic and philological perfection of his work. Joining him in her capacity as another fine Vietnamese artist is the young Hoàng Mông Thuy.
