David Hykes & The Harmonic Choir

Here's a beautiful double LP from the Celestial Harmonies label, a glorious soundbath in lossless APE format. I even cleaned out a good deal of the scratches: HARMONIC MEETINGS

Harmonic chant with pure overtones, and sacred words from the Abrahamic religions, recorded 1986 in the abbey of Le Thoronet, France.

from the liner notes by David Hykes:

In my previous work with the Harmonic Choir, the pure vibrations of the harmonic voices always said what I wanted to say, without words.

All the same, for some years, I sought words that could be sung with this harmonic music. This interest came into the foreground when I was asked to compose music for a traveling art exhibition concerned with the sacred art of Christianity, Judasism and Islam...

As I began to research the musical histories of these religions, it became apparent that musical differentiations between them appeared in time as liturgies gradually diverged. (...) I became fascinated by accounts of the so-called jubilus singing in which the congregation would improvise using sacred words and syllables such as HALLELUYAH (Glory to God), sometimes even leaving out the consonants and chanting open vowels. In my own work, I tried to experiment with words common to at least two of these three religions.

It is the harmonic content of the words which interests me; singing pure vibrations and singing words is the same work. The harmonic content in a word can be brought to life; it comes from the same place as a pure vibration. Sacred words are vibrations and can be experienced as such; content can be found that is free from the ordinary mental and emotional associations which prevent words from having a resonant meaning in the present moment.Dive deep: (1) (2) (3)  [maybe reposted soon]

  1. Hello,

Thanks for everything you post in this blog.

Though, it's asking a password for these archives.

    What is it ?

  2. Hi Manuel,

there's no password. Which unpack program are you using?

  3. like Manuel, I also had trouble with the archives; it didn't ask for a password from me, but using 7zip to unpack, it told me all three archives were corrupted and that tracks 103 and 201 were broken, which they were. I downloaded each archive from one of the different share services, and like I said they all had trouble, so I don't think it was simply a matter of a corrupted download on my end... but whatever the problem is I hope it can be fixed without much trouble, because from what I was able to listen to, this is another really great piece of sound you've shared. I really do love coming here and getting me musical palette expanded!

    thanks again guys,

    Jason

  4. Jason, this could be a problem with 7zip. Please try with RAR or another unpacking software.

  5. Hey H.C.,

my problem with the supposedly corrupted archives seems to have been caused by the different file hosts changing the naming of the different parts at download, so neither 7zip or WinRar worked. But once I renamed them all to the same format, 7zip had no trouble extracting. So it was the middleman causing all the trouble! My apologies for taking up your time and thanks for your help, and for the very cool share! Take care!

  7. Wow. WOW. I'm very pleased to see you have this here; this is one of the very, very few albums I refer to as embodying the Alpha and the Omega of all that is music. One of THE most powerful, intense, sublime and absolutely beautiful works of art I've ever had the pleasure to experience. Maybe it's just me, but that's how I feel about it. I hope others find it as fulfilling as I have. First heard it years ago, about the time it first came out.
