Yet Another Message

This is yet another one of those "I haven't posted in a while" type of posts. Given what's been happening lately including blogs disappearing or quitting, I wonder if people no longer visit music blogs frequently. I have been noticing that in some other areas of the blogosphere, bloggers are posting sporadically and visitors hardly come to the blogs. It seems a lot of the people have migrated over to Twitter and Facebook. I have been considering reviving my Twitter account and possibly start posting shares over there. I still have a Facebook account, but I am using it less often. I don't feel it's safe for me to post there considering Facebook's stance on not valuing privacy. I also don't really like it much. I don't think I've ever felt more uncomfortable on the Internet when I was using Facebook.

Now to the main point of this post. A lot of my links have been dying lately. One of the main culprits is Mediafire. It's been using a bot to find and block access to what has been programmed in its system as copyrighted material that is available on iTunes and/or Amazon. Often, the bot does a poor job. It has blocked access to a lot of my files because it has mistaken the tracks posted for some different artists' tracks that seem to have similar names. I know that Mediafire is using the bot because of panic caused by what happened to Megaupload and threats from the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America). I won't be using it anymore. I'll always remember that it was once a great site to store files from the late 2000s to 2012.
Anyway I have read the numerous re-up requests in my past posts. I am having trouble finding time to do re-ups, but I am still trying to meet requests. Finding reliable file hosters is becoming more difficult. It may be a long while before I can have at least most of them back up. Patience is a virtue.
I did re-up several electronic music albums a few days ago. Check the "Updates" page.
I'll try to keep on putting more back up. They'll be in small batches. Keep checking the "Updates" page.

  1. thanks for soldiering onwards, friend. shares are getting harder to come by and it always hurts to see hard work going down the drain. Personally I only use blogger as a platform to abuse google and annoy users, and I find both FB and Twitter hard to use as well.

I have noticed zippyshare seems to be pretty unstoppable, also depositfiles never seems to be blocked either.

anyway, good luck in your endeavors!

  4. Invaluable!! Don't know any other word to describe your work here..As to numbers falling off I think quality always wins out over quantity..It may be that the relative difficulties folk are now expierencing compared to more relaxed times makes blog following a little more difficult..And as you say Mediafire is now not as friendly as before..But still those who know and value blogs such as these are not going anywhere..Many thanks.

  8. dear friend
yes, its sad to see places like "wolf fifth" & "lunar atrium" close down because of harassment by straights & states.

i'm everyday reminded of how rare it is on the internet to find conscientious postings of rare recordings, presented with helpful, insightful commentary & good metadata: roll call of performers, date(s) of recordings, pictures of the back & front covers, or the lp labels. this stuff is seriously important & you never fail to deliver on it. sadly, collectors & posters with quality sites like yours are becoming fewer what with retirement & hostile shutdown. i hope you can buck the trend. i really like the stuff you present & your style.

for the record i have a button for your site & look in every day. i'm looking forward to checking out the new re-posts.

and you're not a pirate, if anything, and continuing the metaphor, you're a smuggler. but in actuality, you're a self funded free-lance conservator of vulnerable cultural artefacts. bravo!
    your sincerely & gratefully

  9. As a 60+ hippie who only discovered the music blogosphere a couple of years ago I have a large vinyl collection as well as cassettes and CD's. While my CD player still works, my turntable and cassette deck gave up long ago. Coupled with a stagnant income I now rely on blogs like yours to both keep up to date with with what's happening in music to and hear the music I own but can't listen to. Your's was one of the first sites I stumbled across and I visit regularly, your tastes are very similar to my own. In recent months some of my favorite sites have disappeared and I would hate to see you join them, but I can't claim to know the kind of stress/problems you and your fellow bloggers face daily. As I do not use either Twitter or Facebook my vote would be against such a move, but you've got to do whatever is best for you. Just know that your dedication and endless hours of time are appreciated. Thanks!

  11. I have a list of bookmarked music blogs i visit DAILY! Yours is one of them because it is always stuff I have no other access to and it is interesting. Sometimes I download something, sometimes I just gawk at it and read. I'm nearly 50 and have a large vinyl and cd collection. I'm still adding to those. I'm also a musician, which makes me curious about all forms of music. Music blogs have expanded my listening exponentially. I hope "the industry" never figures out how to clamp down completely.

  12. Hi, I really like your blog, but I belong mostly to the silent majority. Let me just thank you for your great work, that has helped me discover a lot of great stuff.

In case you switch to another channel, I may consider using a twitter account (but not facebook: i'll definitely stay away from that...)

    Cheers!

  13. the work that goes into a closet of curiosities does not go unnoticed, friend. it is truly amazing to have found your page and to get the opportunity to hear this music and to learn about where it comes from. many greetz ____ !

  14. First off, thanks for all the effort you voluntarily invest in an undertaking such as this...
Interesting remarks on the current situation in blogosphere; is there really a transition in progress from one to the other paradigm? Its mostly always interesting what the future will bring, as mostly always something new - and as of now yet wholly unforseeable - will come up...

    Kind regards, Daniel

  15. your blog is so great - i am so grateful for it. if you do find it can not be maintained i hope there remains a way to at least keep up with your interests and insights.

  16. oh man, thank you so much for your efforts to post good music. I agree with Geoff and the 60+ hippy. Me too , I have a large vinyl collection, and I do not use Twitter nor Facebook. And with WolfFifth and so many others gone you are remaining a great one to visit. For myself it is not such a big deal that the current pace of new posts is slow, I have so much music. I can last a hundred years without sleep, and I probably will not be able to listen to ALL once. and I do like to listen to good music more than once. so. for me it is not the worst thing when new posts are coming in less frequent. I see that there will be new visitors. And they like new input as much as I did.
I hope you find your way and are not knocked down by media-fire blockades

thanks for so much goodness so far, Richard

  17. I'm running a nearly year old music blog on here as well (Jumbly Music), and your basement blog was one of the inspiring things to get me into it. I'm all about music archaeology and anthropology, as well as support for lost music and free music. I guess since my focus is more on the end of already online albums, it takes me less work, but I'd love to have the time and resources to find things like what you post which have slid into the public domain.

If it ever reaches a point where you are concerned about the strength and readership of your blog, you could always consider consolidating into a co-op blog with other similar blogs who are looking at the same risk of losing readership or dwindling capability to post on a regular level. The only other thing I was thinking would be a possibility of branching over into a broader or more refreshing category. Maybe copying old out of print books?

I dont know. I wouldn't say to give it up if its what you love. I keep up via google reader so that i can see whats happening with a couple hundred blogs at once.

  18. Thank you for the true curiosities. I appreciate the effort and generosity of your sharing even if I don't always love the music.

  22. "Thanks for the music" is, what many people say here. I say: "Thanks for your great work, giving me/us the opportunity to listen to so much great music, of which at least 50% I must admit, I never would have even found without your work." - But let me also say, that I miss respect and thankfulness in so many comments of readers/users/downloaders to the musicians and composers, who's in many cases ground-breaking works you make audible to a wider public here on your forum. I say this as an artist and musicican, who lives at the very edge of a humane living since many years, always making contributions to cultural live, but rarely getting paid for it. There seems to be a lot more respect to (often illegal) uploads of music than to musicians and composers. So there definitely is something wrong. - Don't missunderstand, please, there is nothing wrong about this side, not at all. Sides like this are worthful and important. Really! - But this is a call to all consumers to think a bit more, who's work you are talking about, whom you really should be thankful at first. Art in any form is work, hard work!

  23. I'm sorry to learn of your troubles here at the Closet, but as you've pointed out, you're not alone. Many others in the music blogging community have suffered the same fate, myself included. I wish I held the answer and could point the way for you, but I'm at a crossroad myself. For me, your site has been an invaluable source for obscurities, but more so, a place of learning. I'd hate to see it disappear. Not out of selfishness mind you, but rather because of the passion that informs it. You and the good Doctor have opened my eyes and ears to some marvelous curiosities. For your sake as well as for others like myself, I hope you're able to overcome the roadblocks that have been put before you.

My best wishes to you both.

  25. Keep it up, man. Zippyshare seems to be the file storage site of choice at the moment. And not all of us have Twitter accounts. Stay positive. Rgds.

  26. Please keep it coming. This is a recluse from the bullshit-media. So, we'll be alone in the wilderness if you leave us for facebook and stuff like that...

Thanx for everything you've done so far!

  27. Thanks for the comments. They're all appreciated. I would like for this blog to be alive and active as long as possible and of course continue to share music and other sounds.

It appears that Zippyshare is the best one right now. I am afraid that it will end up eventually going the way of zShare, a great file storage site that no longer exists, or Mediafire.

I have decided to stay here at Blogger for some time. I do not think Facebook or Twitter are adequate. I am not enthusiastic about either of them anyway.

I will make sure to keep everyone up to date on the future plans of this blog.
