Digital Soundscapes

Barry Truax - Digital Soundscapes

The Blind Man (1979), for two-channel tape based on a poem and reading by Norbert Ruebsaat

Aerial (1979), music for solo amplified horn and four computer-synthesized soundtracks; Steven Field - horn

Wave Edge (1983), for four computer-synthesized soundtracks

Solar Ellipse (1984-85), for four computer-synthesized soundtracks

Riverrun (1986), for four computer-synthesized soundtracks

From the liner notes:

All of the works on this recording have been composed with reference to environmental sound, whether as actual source material, as in "The Blind Man", or as metaphor, as in the computer-synthesized pieces. I find it significant that as computers are increasingly involved in music that I and other composers should look to the richness of environmental sound and its spatial characteristics for acoustic models and sound symbolism. This development occurs ironically at a time when noise as a byproduct of the same technology continues to be a major environmental problem. It is my hope that the musical vision of these works may encourage in the listener a greater soundscape awareness and sensitivity. (Barry Truax)

Tracklisting:

1. The Blind Man {16:00}

2. Aerial {9:32}

3. Wave Edge {9:38}

4. Solar Ellipse {11:14}

5. Riverrun {19:44}

For anyone interested in the book, Handbook for Acoustic Ecology, look in the comments.

  1. Hey G.clx, thanks for this Truax...not one I have heard. For you or anyone else who needs it, or could use an electronic copy, here is a scan of Truax's influential HANDBOOK FOR ACOUSTIC ECOLOGY...many thanks to the anonymous person who took the trouble to scan the whole thing...please pass it on:

  2. Thanks, grasp,release :)

    I'll make sure to pass these on. I'll also definitely check it out as I have been curious to learn more about acoustic ecology ever since I first listened to The Vancouver Soundscape (which in case anyone doesn't know, Truax was involved in this project) [* this is in the COC archives, btw].

  3. Hey, david at Renegade here. Love the blog!

    I Wanted to tell you all about this internet radio station I've been doing some work with, LuxuiaMusic.com. They play all sorts of weird, obscure, beautiful vintage sounds (lounge, surf, exotica, soft-psych, go-go, latin jazz, etc.) def. worth checking out.

    For the next two weeks they're focusing on the sexier side of their sound, asking people to tell them about their favorite make-out songs (it's "Get Turned On" time at LuxuriaMusic, what can I say?) Check it out LuxuriaMusic.com!

  10. Hey Grey Calx,

    "The Vancouver Soundscape (which in case anyone doesn't know, Truax was involved in this project) [* this is in the COC archives, btw]."

    I also read Truax's book: Acoustic Communication, it's awesome.
    But what do you mean by the COC archives? I'd like to hear the Vancouver Soundscape I've read so much about. Also check the WFAE (World Forum for Acoustic Ecology) for interesting papers on the subject and more.

  11. Wannes,
    I was using COC as an acronym for my blog name (A Closet of Curiosities).
    Look in the Blog Archive on the upper right corner of this blog. Go to March and click on the triangle next to it. The titles of the posts should come up and the triangle should point down. Scroll down until you see "Vancouver Soundscape", then click on that title and it should take you to what you're looking for.
    Thanks for the WFAE link, I'll check it out. Best wishes to you.
